An Inquiring Mind

Last night Princess, Daddy and I were watching TV after Flower had gone to bed. I don't even recall what we were watching but it had nothing to do with babies. I was folding laundry, Daddy was running the remote, and Princess was contemplating her bedtime snack, or so I thought.

Out of the blue Princess turns to Daddy and asks "So, are you two going to have more babies?" Daddy took it in stride because we're very accustomed to that question. He laughed and responded no. I was a little more shocked....I've heard that question a lot, but not from Princess. Apparently Princess didn't like Daddy's response so she told him "Oh, just get used to it, babies are fun!" I don't know where Princess is getting her information but I have other words to describe babies....fun yes, but there's more to it than that.

Now I'm just going to sit back and wait for Homestead to comment. By the way, we are NOT considering any more babies.

Same Old Stuff

Not much new around here. I’ve been busy at work which seems to make the weekends fly by even faster than usual. It’s been a while since I’ve posted so I thought I’d better let the world know we’re still kicking.

Last week was crazy busy at work and as I sit here typing I can’t recall anything interesting or funny to share. Princess had gymnastics on Thursday and she was invited to stay for the “big girl” class which is an extra ½ hour at the end of her regular class. Nana is a trooper and let her stay. Princess does well and deserves to move up to the longer class. It’s wrestling with Flower for an extra 30 minutes that scares me.

Friday the girls and I stayed home and did a little laundry and house work. It always amazes me how much crud builds up on the floors even when we rarely wear our shoes inside. Then we headed to town to shop a going-out-of-business sale at a local kid’s shop and found some great deals. We bought Princess two pair of her favorite sandals in different colors and sizes so she’ll be set for the next two years. We found a few birthday gifts for Flower and a really good life vest for the girls since Flower will be too big for the infant vest this summer. When all was said and done we walked out with about a dozen items and spent about 20% of the retail price. Good for us, not so good for the shop owner. I am sad to see her close but it doesn’t surprise me. She sold high end outdoor clothing and equipment for infants and children. Unfortunately there are not enough parents in our town willing to spend over $100 on one outfit for their child who will only be wearing it for one season. We visited her store regularly and made a few purchases, mostly shoes because there’s no where else in town to buy the shoes we like, so now we’ll be back to online shoe shopping. The shop also had a play area with an adorable playhouse and a kayak which the girls loved. I haven’t broke the news to Princess yet but she won’t be happy when she finds out the shop closed.

We finished off the day with a trip to Pizza Hut for dinner. We don’t eat out much these days, Flower just can’t seem to sit still for an entire meal and its one thing to wrestle her into her chair at home, but I’m not playing that game in a restaurant. Don’t get me wrong, she’s not horrible to take out, it just seems like more work than it’s worth right now. I like to relax when I go out for dinner and there’s not much relaxation while entertaining a toddler in a restaurant. Princess loves to eat out and she’s very good at it. She has always been well behaved in restaurants. She is able to sit still and color while we are waiting for our food. Hubby called Flower the anti-Princess the other day and that pretty much sums it up. The good news is while it makes going out for dinner a little challenging right now, Nana and Papa assure us that Auntie A was the exact same way as a child and she turned out pretty well so we just need to ride this one out.

Saturday we went to town so Princess and Daddy could get haircuts and pick up a few items at Target. Daddy always gets his hair cut at one of the two national chain salons we have here. I’ve been taking Princess to the other one because there is a Starbucks next door. We make a girls day out and have coffee before or after her appointment depending on if we have to wait. So about half way through her hair cut Princess says “Mommy, why didn’t we go to the place we usually get my haircut?” Thanks kiddo. So I did some fast talking about how our stylist changed her hours, etc. and changed the subject. I’m always afraid to offend the person with the scissor and once I find a stylist I like I’m very faithful. I’m sure this girl is used to non-repeat customers because I don’t think you can make an appointment with a specific stylist but just the same, I wanted her to like us in case she gets our number next time. I mentioned the haircuts only because about a week ago Hubby was sitting in the living room and Princess came down the stairs and said to him “Daddy, your hair is long, you need a haircut!” I swear I hadn’t mentioned a thing about his hair so she came up with that on her own.

Sunday we made it to church and it was nothing short of a miracle. Princess had nightmares all night and Flower was her usual sleepless self so we were all very tired. We napped and watched football all afternoon and into the evening. Hubby’s team didn’t do so well this year so he only watched 95% of the games instead of every single second. Princess asked when football season was over and I told her there was only one more game left this year and then we wouldn’t have to watch football until the fall. She paused for a second and in a concerned voice asked “What will Daddy watch when football is over?” I said baseball, to which she rolled her eyes and replied “Great!”

I had Monday off so the girls and I hung around the house again. That was our week. Auntie J is coming to visit this weekend so Princess has begun to plan the entertainment. Let’s just say there is an old prom dress of mine that is going to get some use....

2009 Week 2

My last post was a week ago so I suppose I should write a quick rundown of our week. It was pretty quiet. The work week flew by without anything interesting to report. Nana was out of town most of the week so Daddy got to pick up the girls. I was fortunate to come home to dinner cooking and bathing girls every night so they did well.

Princess had gymnastics on Thursday. They have been off since mid December and she wouldn’t go last time. Her best buddy was home sick that day so I wasn’t sure how it would go. She got there, changed into her leotard, join the class and had a great time so I think we’re back on track.

The girls and I hung out at home on Friday. Saturday we took all the Christmas decorations down. Hubby and I dropped the girls off with Nana and Papa that evening and met some friends for dinner. When we got home Nana and Papa were watching TV. We chatted for a few minutes and they went home. There was a pile of blankets on the sofa but I really didn’t pay much attention. I was in the kitchen and Hubby was looking for the remote in the living room. He started to pick up the blankets to look under them and stops quickly and says “No one said anything about that!” I said “What?” and he said “That!” and points to the sofa. Hidden under two big fuzzy blankets was Princess, sound asleep. It’s a good thing Hubby decided to look for the remote otherwise Princess would have spent the night on the couch and I would have gotten an earful in the morning.

Speaking of where Princess it sleeping these days, she received a camping kit from Uncle S and Auntie S for Christmas. The tent is really cute and she insisted on sleeping in it so we moved it up to her room. It’s almost as big as the open area in her room. There is just enough room to walk around two sides and still be able to access her closet and bed. She has been sleeping in it since Christmas and there is no sign that she will ever return to her bed.

Sunday afternoon we went to a birthday party for a Sunday school classmate at a local hot spot for kiddie parties. The girls had a blast. By the time we got home it was too late for naps and Flower was exhausted. By 4:30 she was fighting to stay awake so Daddy made an early dinner and the poor little thing just sat at the table crying. We pulled out all her favorites and she wouldn't touch a thing (Do you want cheese and crackers? No! Do you want graham crackers? No! Do you want M&Ms? No!) so finally Daddy asked her if she wanted to go to bed and she said “Yes!” so she went to bed at 5:45 last night. I had to wake her up at 6:45 this morning.

That wraps up our week. The weather is warming up a little so hopefully we’ll get a chance to go skiing this weekend. Have a good week!

Our Year in Review

Many things have changed in the last few years around our house. One of those is the amount of quality time I spend with a good book. It’s mostly my fault because I haven’t forced myself to make time to read, but the girls do get a small portion of the blame as well.

I don’t read much anymore. I did find time to read a handful of novels last year which is an improvement from 2007. As I was perusing the Sunday paper last weekend I noticed Dave Barry’s Year in Review. I wouldn’t say I’m a big fan, but I do enjoy his wrap-up of the prior year so in the spirit of the New Year, here is my attempt at 2008 in review (this would be better with pictures but I haven’t had time to load them to my new laptop so you’ll have to use your imagination).

January – To be truthful I can’t remember what we did last week let alone last year so I’m guessing we were doing the same as we are right now, recovering from the holidays.

February – I changed my schedule at work from a “normal” 8-5 work week to four 10s so I have Friday off. Working until 6:00 every night took a little getting used to, mostly just the hour I miss with the girls every night, but having a 3 day weekend every week is worth it.

March – Flower’s first birthday and since we’re boring people we had a small party with family. Two parties actually, one at Nana and Papa’s house and one at Grandma and Grandpa’s house up north. Flower thoroughly enjoyed her birthday cake and made a huge mess….as expected. We cleaned cake and frosting from every inch of her and her chair.

April – Daddy’s big project at work really picked up and his work schedule went from semi-normal to 6 AM to 7 PM on a good day. When summer came he started working from sun up to sun down seven days a week. Needless to say we didn’t do much but hang out at home all summer.

May – Our “vacation” if that’s what you want to call it, was a road trip out of state to visit family and celebrate a cousin’s college graduation. Luckily our pick-up has a DVD player so in preparation for the trip I invested in a half dozen new movies. Unfortunately, Princess wanted to watch Shrek II the entire trip. Since Daddy couldn’t get too much time off we drove there on a Thursday and Friday, played on Saturday, and drove back on Sunday and Monday. Flower was so tired of her car seat that she would start to cry when you had to buckle her back in at each stop. We decided another 12 hour road trip would have to wait until Flower was a little older. By the way, the week before we left both the girls had terrible colds which they graciously gave to me so I was miserable the entire trip….and probably grumpy….but you’ll have to ask Daddy about that!

June – Daddy finally buys the raft he’s had his eye on for over a year. I’m still not sure why because he’s working 80 hours a week and doesn’t have time to use it but whatever. Cousin H was born at the end of the month and Grandma and Grandpa headed south to meet her. We had a slow leak in our water heater so Daddy and Papa spent the majority of two days trying so install a new water heater….but that’s another post.

July – Princess discovered fireworks this year. I’m too cheap to buy fireworks (besides being outrageously expensive they are also dangerous) which isn’t a problem because our neighborhood is a war zone on the 4th. The neighbor directly across the street dropped some cash at the firework stand this year and Princess was delighted. Our neighbor’s kids are in high school so I think he enjoyed all the innocent “ohs” and “ahs” from Princess. Unfortunately Princess was not happy on the 5th when we had to tell her she would have to wait another year for more fireworks.

August – Auntie C and Cousin H come to visit us at the end of the month so we spent some quality time at Grandma and Grandpa’s. Keilie-dog has yet another surgery, this time to remove an enlarged spleen. The testing determined it was cancerous and a different type of cancer than the tumors which were removed in 2007. I have yet to figure out if that’s good or bad. Knock on wood but as of her last check-up she is still tumor-free.

September – Princess turns four and I decide to enroll her in dance class. I think I started this blog around that time as well so if you’ve been reading you’ll already know most of our activities. Dance doesn’t go so well for a number of reasons….tights, ballet slippers, ponytails….just to name a few. So we attend class for a month, on the sidelines, and decide it’s not for us.

October – Hunting season opens. Do I need to say more? Daddy manages to find time to go hunting while still working crazy hours but don’t get me started. The girls and I get ready for Halloween which Princess remembers vividly from last year. She has a sweet tooth just like her mommy. We decide to enroll Princess in the same gymnastics (a.k.a. tumbling but Princess insists on calling it gymnastics these days) class as one of her friends from daycare. She loves to dance and we thought a familiar face would help. Princess was a little hesitant at first, but she loves class. She takes after me in that she likes to sit back and watch before jumping in to new things. Flower is very interested in participating too so maybe next year we’ll see if she’s able join.

November – Preparation for Christmas began with practices for the church Christmas program and the dance performance. We didn’t have to do much outside of our usual routine but it gave me a glimpse of what’s to come in the next 17 years…. We spent Thanksgiving at Grandma and Grandpa’s house so Daddy could get that last weekend of hunting in and Flower discovered popcorn. I know, probably not the best snack for a one year old child, but Princess shares her intense love of popcorn with her Grandpa and we couldn’t keep it from Flower any longer.

December – Refer to November. We got the dance performance and church Christmas program out of the way early in the month. That was very fortunate for us because Princess picked up a nasty stomach bug which landed us at home for 5 days mid-month. After the initial “sick” stuff was out of the way it was a nice long weekend to stay in and get some things done. I was mostly done with my shopping so we took the opportunity to bake cookies and make candy. I’m thinking I might try to set aside one weekend next December to stay home as well because I think it helped us get through the activities of the following week. Oh, and I should mention that we cut our own Christmas tree this year and it was a beauty. Daddy picked a gorgeous (and not too big I might add) tree and we had a wonderful afternoon of sledding and hot chocolate with friends. Definitely a must do again next year. I have one final note to add. December also brought us a gift of another sort….Auntie J moved closer to us….much, much closer….and we are really excited to be able to see her more often.

That’s it….an entire year in 1,000 words or less. I hope 2009 is as kind to us. From our house to yours, God bless and best wishes for a healthy and happy 2009!

Our Last Day to Play

Tomorrow life as we know it starts again. We’ve all been off work and daycare for almost two weeks and it’s been fabulous. I love not worrying about bedtimes and nap times and schedules. I love just hanging out at home.

We’re all tired. It’s been two weeks of late nights. I’m hoping to get everyone to bed early tonight in hopes of making tomorrow a little easier on our daycare lady. Auntie A and Uncle L are at the airport waiting to head home as I type. Normally we would see them off also, but the last few times Princess has went to the airport the farewell has been very tearful. In fact, last fall when Auntie C and Cousin H left I thought we were going to lose Princess to airport security. She took off running down the hall to give Auntie C one last goodbye hug and kiss. Luckily Auntie C wasn’t through security yet but it was close. So we decided to sit this one out. It seems less traumatic for everyone (Right Auntie A?).

With that, I’ll post a few pictures and call it good. Work will be very busy for the next few weeks, or months, so you may not hear from me on a regular basis. Sorry.

Where Does She Get This Stuff?

As I mentioned yesterday, we hosted New Year’s Day at our house. Today is Auntie A’s birthday (Happy Birthday Auntie A! I’d tell the 4 people who read my blog how old you are but they already know.) but Papa had to go back to work today so we celebrated her birthday last night as well. After the big bash we chatted a bit and then everyone started to head home.

The girls were up a couple hours past their normal bedtime (whatever that is these days….vacation does terrible things to our schedule) and wanted to go with them. So I grabbed the girls and took them over to the front window so we could watch and wave to Auntie A and Uncle L as they pulled out of the driveway.

We waited for what seemed like 10 minutes but it was probably only 2 and Princess says, “What are they doing out there? Kissing?”. It’s a good thing I didn’t have a mouthful of wine at that moment. A few seconds later Auntie A comes back in the house to ask to borrow an ice scraper because they couldn’t find Nana’s and their Albertson’s Preferred card wasn’t working so well.

I thought we were doing a pretty good job of monitoring what the girls watch on TV but I think I’m going to re-evaluate.

Happy New Year!

359 days until Christmas….or something like that. I just wanted to start out the New Year on the right foot and post something quick. I’d like to say my New Year resolution is to post every day but those of you who know me will know that won’t happen. I’m not really a resolution kind of person. I never follow through; a year is a long time for some things. So I figure, why set myself up for failure, right?

Santa was very generous this year. He brought me a new laptop, which is much faster than my old laptop so posting is much quicker now. Check the comments in a few days….I’m sure Homestead will have something to say about “speed”.

Today we’re watching football with Auntie A and Uncle L. Nana, Papa and Grandma M are coming over to help us devour the prime rib in the oven. I hope the New Year finds you happy and healthy. God bless and Happy 2009!
