Goodbye November. Hello December. Shoppers, start your engines.
I am terribly behind this year. I need motivation. The girls want Christmas lights. Lots and lots of Christmas lights. I want time to stop for about 3 days so I can get my shopping done, cut a tree, decorate said tree, hang copious amounts of white lights on the house, bake cookies, make popcorn balls, fudge and caramels, and drink lots of hot cocoa.
Tomorrow I vow to have a better attitude. I will update my list, mark off the few things I have done, and add the other 40 things to the list that are bouncing around in my head. Tonight I am going to grumble about all the things I have to do in the next 25 days. Ho, ho, ho....Merry Christmas!

Lucky
Friday night Dear Husband decided to roast marshmallows. The weather was, and still is, gorgeous and we are all ready for summer. Flower missed her nap that afternoon and she fell asleep right after dinner. I hauled her up to her bed and left her door open thinking she would wake up after a quick nap and join us. She didn’t wake up and slept for over 12 hours but I digress.
After I tucked Princess in later that night, I looked out our bathroom window to check on the fire pit. The fire was mostly out when we came inside, but we were keeping an eye on it anyway. As I looked out, I heard a strange noise I couldn’t place. It sounded like the sprinklers were on in the backyard but they were not. Our neighbor had been working in his backyard so I figured he was watering something close to the fence.
I went downstairs a few minutes later and I could still here noise from the kitchen. It was louder and sounded closer. I stuck my head out the patio door and immediately heard a spraying water noise coming from under the deck. This was not good. All the plumbing for the sprinklers is under that deck.
I called DH and he ran outside. Sure enough, the pipe next to the shut off valve for the sprinklers had broke. Luckily it was a small crack. Luckily we were home when it happened. Luckily it happened when we were awake. Luckily it happened on a warm evening when the windows were open so I could hear the water. I could go on but you get the picture.
DH did a little plumbing first thing Saturday and all is well. I have a bad case of the “What ifs”. I guess if this is the only plumbing emergency we ever have we’ll be very, very lucky.

Good Morning Auntie C!
This one is for you! You are right, I have been a slacker. Not sure why, just very, very unmotivated to blog.
Some of the reason is work. It has been stressful lately and by the time I get home my brain is jello and I would be unable to compose a sentence (can't even write a very good sentence when my brain is fresh).
Most of the reason I haven't posted lately is because I can't think of anything interesting to write. We are still sick and I'm sure the Internet is tired of hearing me complain (and you've already heard it too). No one wants to hear me talk about ear infections, strep, and various viruses we can't seem to shake.
I pledge to post more. I will think of something funny today and post it tonight. I am sure Flower has said or done something you will enjoy. Princess lost her second top middle tooth yesterday so she has a inch gap and looks like great grandpa. Seriously :)

Our Annual Tradition
Today is opening day for big game rifle season. Dear Husband embarked on his annual week long hunting trip with Papa, Uncle B, and a family friend. It’s a small crew this year. Papa has been taking this trip for years. I’m not sure of the exact number of years, but I think it’s pushing 30.
The guys look forward to their trip every year. I’ve never minded a week to myself but apparently Flower is opposed to DH going hunting. This is the second year in a row she has had a little intestinal bug when DH was hunting. In case you forgot, go read this.
Princess missed her daddy Friday night at bedtime but she seems to have moved on. She hasn’t given me any good one-liners like she did last year. http://pinkis4girls.blogspot.com/2008/11/daddy-went-hunting.html
So rather than going to church this morning we’re watching cartoons and drawing pictures. Flower’s tummy seems to be better this morning but with all the junk going around right now I thought we should probably stay home rather than pass our bug around the nursery at church.
Speaking of all the stuff going around right now, I’m not sure what to think about the flu pandemic. We all got our seasonal flu shots. Flower is in the first group for the H1N1 vaccine but we missed the clinic last week because of bad information on the health department website and hot line. I’ve never visited our health department website until this year. So far I’m not impressed.
Last week I was a little concerned about the flu virus. I am trying not to buy in to the media frenzy even though 3 teachers at Princess’s school have the swine flu and four of her classmates were absent all week. We are trying to be vigilant about washing our hands, coughing in our elbows and following the other preventative measures.
Then I sit down with my coffee and the paper yesterday morning and see this. 6-year-old died from H1N1 A perfectly healthy child, no underlying medical conditions. I know the statistics, the flu (any strain) is serious and healthy people die from it every year. But it is just not fair. My thoughts and prayers are with the family who lost their son.

A Co-Worker Told Me This Today....
....regarding an IT issue.
Turns out the underlying problem is that it is a computer and people are trying to make it do something logical - at least to them. Not necessarily to the computer. Kind of like herding cats - it is theoretically possible, but not really worth trying to do.
This is one of those classic "tech" problems that can be analyzed according to the "syllable test":
cus-tom-i-za-tion = 5 syllables = bad
de-fault = 2 syllables = good
Nuff said.

Now I Understand
I was craving a glass of iced tea yesterday afternoon so I jumped in my pickup and headed to McDonald's. Where else can you get a huge glass of brewed iced tea (not that disgusting fountain stuff posing as iced tea) for $1?
I pulled on to the one-way street next to my office at the same time a lady pulled on from the mall parking lot. I needed to get in the left lane and so I slowed to a crawl waiting for her to accelerate so I could change lanes. She went a few yards down the street and stopped eight car lengths behind the car waiting at the stop light in front of her....leaving me hanging in the middle of the street still trying to switch lanes.
I don't think she even noticed I was two inches from her bumper. As I was cursing her in my head I saw her license plate frame. "I can do anything....I'm the mother of 3 girls!" Ok, so I'll cut her some slack.

TGIF
Friday
57 degrees
Raining lightly
Dora on the television
A cup of hot coffee sitting next to my laptop
Absolutely no where to go today
This is what I call a perfect Friday.

Gone Like A Flash
This post sounds a little familiar. It seems I feel this way at the end of every month.
Tomorrow it will be August. At the end of the month Princess will start school. Ok, so it’s just pre-kindergarten, but still, it’s a big change.
I’m looking forward to the end of August because I think Princess will really enjoy pre-k.
I’m not looking forward to the end of August because that means summer is officially over. The habitual planner in me is not looking forward to change, however my work schedule may change for the better so that will be nice. My schedule change is still up in the air but I’m hoping for a couple less hours a week which will help our daily schedule immensely….not our checkbook, but my life will be less hectic. I hope.
I’m also not looking forward to the end of August because I’m sure preschool will bring a entirely new list of things Princess will learn and I’m not talking about reading, writing and arithmetic if you know what I mean. There will be 11 other kids in her class and I’m sure some of them will be more “seasoned” than Princess. Don’t get me wrong, we don’t shelter her from the world, but we use avoidance as a means to make life less complicated some times.
For example, Princess will be five in a couple months. She has only drank soda a handful of times. She has had a root beer float for a special occasion at daycare once and 7-Up at two or three birthday parties. We’ve never given her a drink of our soda and she knows soda is not for kids. Flower is two and she has never had soda. I’m not opposed to soda. I drink soda. Not a lot, but I do enjoy a Dr. Pepper on occasion. I think children don’t need any more empty calories which rot their teeth. They get enough sugar in all the candy we eat :) I have a dreadful sweet tooth and I’m trying not to pass it on to my children.
Enjoy the last days of summer. Don’t blink because Christmas will be here before we know it.

It Was a Wet and Wild Kind of Weekend
It’s Tuesday. I’m not really sure where Monday went. Before I know it the weekend will be here again. That’s a good thing. Summer is flying by. That’s a bad thing. Last weekend was the first in almost 3 months which we’ve been home and cold/stomach virus free. Rather than sticking around a house in terrible need of a good scrubbing we played at the lake and on the river.
Friday the girls and I went out for lunch at a new bakery. It was delicious. Princess takes after her parents and enjoys dining out. Flower just likes to make a mess with her food so I say dining out is one less time I’ll have to clean the floor. That afternoon we met Homestead at the lake for some fun in the sun. The kids had a marvelous time wading in the water and playing in the sand. We will definitely put the lake on our list of things to do again before the summer is over.
Saturday was Dear Husband’s birthday so he went fishing while the girls and I watched Saturday morning cartoons. We were completely worn out from our outing on Friday. There was a commercial for a hotel on TV with a line about going out or staying in and Princess looked at me and said “We are not going out today….I’m exhausted!” After a long nap Princess felt better so we dropped the girls off at Nana’s for the evening. DH and I ran some errands and went out for pizza.
Sunday we took the raft out for a little fishing. We had a big crew. Nana, Papa, Grandma M, and the four of us. We packed a lunch and took the fishing poles. It was Flower’s first trip in the raft. She did ok but we’ll probably wait until next summer to take her again. Sitting in one place for more than 30 seconds isn’t really her thing yet. Princess is a little better in that department so she and Papa fishing off the back of the raft. Grandma M, Nana and I tried to entertain Flower in the front of the raft. DH rowed. We saw river otters, pelicans, geese, a bald eagle and deer. Princess and I each caught a fish. Actually Papa hooked the fish and Princess reeled it in. I was getting lunch out of the cooler and missed it but DH said she gave the poor little fish the ride of its life. A good day was had by all. Nana and Grandma M made a delicious birthday dinner for DH to finish off our day.
That was our weekend. The girls are still exhausted and so am I. It seems like all we do is try to catch up on sleep and rest during the week so we can go like crazy on the weekend. I love summer but sometimes I long for winter so I have an excuse to stay home.

Happy 90th Birthday Great Grandpa!

July is a busy birthday month for us. Grandpa, Great Grandpa, and Dear Husband are July babies. DH and I were married on Great Grandpa's birthday 13 years ago. We reminisced over a bottle of wine and chicken alfredo last night. It was lovely.
Before I get on with the purpose of this post, I'm going to take a moment to brag a bit. DH and I have been married for 13 years but we've been together since the 80s. I know, that makes us really old. November 1989 to be exact so this winter we'll celebrate 20 years of togetherness. Seems like a long time but it's flow by rather quickly. I wonder where we'll be 20 years from now?
Back to my original post. Yesterday Great Grandpa (my grandpa) turned 90 years old. He's amazing. I might go as far as calling him my hero. He has the biggest heart of anyone I know. No matter what happens he always makes me feel like I'm the most important person in the world. Most, if not all, of my childhood memories involve my grandpa and I would not be the person I am today without him.
My mom and my aunt planned a party for my grandpa last weekend. The girls and I spent most of the week at my parents house with Auntie C, Future Uncle P, and Cousin H. The big bash was on Saturday and over 100 people came to help us celebrate. We had a wonderful day visiting with family and friends. The most repeated phrase at the party was "I hope I look half as good as Grandpa when I'm that age." Here's to another year Gramps! I love you! K-

Just an Observation
OK, I’ll admit I am a fan of the show Jon and Kate Plus 8. I think it is mostly because I am in awe of anyone who has multiples, let alone two sets. The show gives me a small glimpse into what life might be like with multiples. I’m not going to ramble on about the Gosselin’s current situation because you can read the tabloids.
I did want to share this article, however, because there is one line in it where the author points out something that occurred to me just last night as I was reading Snow White to Princess at bedtime. "Look at Walt Disney cartoons: It's always the wicked stepmother and the hero father." I have been reading Walt Disney stories to Princess for over four years. Last night was the first time it occurred to me how similar most of the story lines were. That’s it. I have no point, just an observation.

Happy Mother's Day!
It's Friday and our weekend went from no plans and yard work to a parade in the rain (or snow from the looks of it), lunch with the great grandparents, an early Mother's Day celebration with different great grandparents on Saturday, and a day trip to out-of-town relatives on Sunday. The girls are watching the Wonder Pets Mother's Day special so I thought I'd take a moment to post a quick note.
I was about half way through my pregnancy with Princess on my first Mother's Day. We were visiting our parents that weekend and at church they asked all the mothers to come up front. The pastor said a few words and we all got a flower. I remember feeling a little strange with all the other mothers who were mostly my mother's age because compared to them, what did I know? I didn't deserve any recognition, heck, I hadn't done anything yet. In fact I wasn't really showing and didn't plan on getting out of my seat but Papa insisted. I was excited about becoming a mother, but I had no idea what a wonderful, amazing thing it really is.
Mother's Day is suppose to be about celebrating your mother and reminding her of the fact that without her you wouldn't be you. I don't just mean that literally. I'm very fortunate to have a wonderful mother. She's caring, compassionate, and always sacrifices for the good of her family. I can't think of a time when she has put herself before someone else, especially her children. She's the glue that holds everything together. Without her we'd never make it. I know there are days when she feels like she just can't do it anymore. I don't blame her. I know I couldn't walk a day in her shoes. But she always does, and I don't tell her how much I appreciate her often enough.
I think Mother's Day is also a time to cherish your children if you are a mother. I had a great life before Princess, but it's beyond belief now that I have her and Flower. They are both amazing people, even at such a young age. They make every day new and exciting. They make us laugh. They make me smile. I have no idea what we did without them. Life must have been really boring. I'd like to take all the credit for creating such beautiful children, but I know they are the result of God's blessings and a loving family. I'm a total believer it takes a village to raise a child.
So I guess this wasn't a short post after all. But all you mothers (and children too) out there will understand. I hope everyone has a great weekend. Happy Mother's Day! Love you mom!

Gross Me Out
With all the recent talk about the H1N1 flu I’ve been thinking about our bathroom habits. Before the 12 year old boy in your starts giggling, I’m talking dental hygiene.
Some might say I’m a bit of a germaphob. Is that a real word? My sister-in-law, who shall remain nameless, is much worse than I am, but I have my moments. Being the mother of two children has weakened my phobia. Heck, I just don’t have the time to sanitize every surface of our house and constantly worry about who is touching what when we are out and about. I figure life is too short and we need to build up our immune systems anyway.
Even though I’ve mellowed considerably, I still have a thing about toothbrushes. I just can’t stand the thought of my toothbrush, or anyone else’s for that matter, coming in contact with a surface other than teeth. Sometimes I just leave the room when Princess is loading her toothbrush with toothpaste because I can’t stand to see her lay it on the counter. I clean the bathroom regularly, but still….
This morning Princess was brushing her teeth and I was combing Flower’s hair. Princess finished and began to rinse the sink out. She has a thing about dried toothpaste in the sink….drives her crazy. She’s rinsing the sink trying to remove a spot of toothpaste and it wouldn’t budge. She reaches over, grabs her toothbrush, and starts using it to scrub the toothpaste out of the sink. I may have over-reacted just a tad when I shrieked “Don’t use your toothbrush to scrub the sink!!!” and frightened poor Princess. She burst into tears and I felt terrible. So we snuggled a bit and I calmly explain to her why it’s not a good idea to use your toothbrush for anything except brushing your teeth. I hope I didn’t do any permanent damage.

Earth Day 2009
In honor of Earth Day I thought I’d post about what we’re doing to help out the earth. Those of you who know us know this will be a short post.
Last fall we started recycling plastics. It all came about sort of selfishly, I’ll admit. There was a group at work sponsoring a recycling drive. If you brought something in to recycle they entered you in a drawing for an iPod. It just happened to be the Monday after a road trip to Grandma and Grandpa’s so we had a vehicle full of plastic bottles.
Princess helped me gather all the empty plastic containers in the house and I showed her where to find the recycling symbol on the bottom. She immediately began checking every single plastic container in our house for the recycling symbol and number….even plastic containers that were still full. We had a few close calls with full bottles of ketchup and juice with open lids….
I’m happy to report we are still recycling plastics. Flower has even joined the recycling mission. When she finishes a bottle of water or juice she runs over and sets it on the kitchen counter and yells “CYCLE! CYCLE!” until we help her take it to the box in the garage. I must say it’s not the easiest thing to do around here. There are only a few places which accept plastics (24 hr drop-off locations that is, there are others places throughout the year which accept more but I don’t have space to store the recycling for more than a couple weeks), only 1s and 2s, and they don’t accept milk jugs. I have yet to figure out why. The girls enjoy checking every plastic container to find the number. I feel slightly less guilty about the huge ecological footprint we undoubtedly have. Every little bit helps, right?

It's a Spring Thing
Princess is ready for spring. Heck, we’re all ready for spring. For the past month she has been asking me if it is spring and I’ve been telling her it is. According to the calendar, it is spring.
We were fortunate to have a beautiful Easter weekend. We played outside without coats and had to break out the sunscreen. Yesterday the temperature dropped to the 30s and it’s snowing. This morning it feels more like February than April.
As Princess was putting on her winter coat this morning she looked at me with great displeasure and said “Mommy, I thought you told me it was spring.” This, my dear, is spring in Montana.

Happy Turkey Day!
Are you ready for Thanksgiving? What I’m really asking is “Are you ready for Christmas?” because on Friday the Christmas frenzy will officially begin. I think I’m ready. I have a list; I’ve checked it twice, or three or four hundred times. I have a gift next to everyone’s name except for a couple of the cousins. (Auntie C, are you reading this?) I’m a list person so I enjoy this part of Christmas. I love making a list and marking things off….it gives me a sense of accomplishment.
Flower hasn’t quite caught on to Christmas yet, but she LOVES to open gifts so we’ll definitely have to dust off the video camera on Christmas morning. Princess remembers last Christmas vividly and has been fine tuning her list for a few weeks. I’m still trying to get her to nail down what she will tell Santa so Santa can start shopping. We’re having a little trouble trying to figure out what Flower would like from Santa since she doesn’t have a list. Last year Flower was a baby and Princess decided Flower wanted a teddy bear from Santa. Perfect. Santa loved that idea. I’ve been trying to get Princess to think of something Flower might like again this year but so far I haven’t had any luck.
We’re heading north to Grandma and Grandpa’s (and Great Grandma and Great Grandpa’s) for turkey day. This will allow Daddy to get in a few more days of hunting before the season ends. It will also provide ample opportunity for our dog to “meet” Grandpa’s new puppy. Our dog will be wearing her training collar so she’ll be on her best behavior all weekend. I can’t remember a time that our dog has been around a very young puppy so hopefully she will succumb to her maternal instinct and love the puppy….not confuse it with an appetizer.

Another Mama and Her Babies
I know this video went around the Internet a few months ago but I just received it again from a friend. I forgot how much I enjoy watching it. The mother in me can't help but get a little teary eyed watching the twins play in the sprinkler....and that song always gets me too. The girls and I have watched it a few times this morning and we thought you might enjoy seeing it again as well.

It Was Our First Play Date Too
Homestead, Sweet and Tuff came out for a play date this week. You can read the synopsis here. It was our first play date too. Princess waited all weekend for Sweet to come visit. We’re not sure exactly what they discussed at the Blackfoot last Friday, but whatever it was, Princess could barely contain her excitement to see Sweet again.
We don’t get together with Homestead nearly as often as we should. We are similar in many ways….which is the main reason we don’t make time to visit. That and geography. We both live a few miles out of town in almost opposite directions so dropping by to say hello isn’t really an option.
The kids had a wonderful time. In fact Princess is still talking about Sweet and Tuff. I guess Homestead and I need to make an effort to “play” more. It’s not the New Year yet, but maybe I’ll make an early resolution to invite Homestead and her family (yes, Hot Stuff is always welcome too) over more than once a year.
